Drop fade: a transition that descends behind the ear
A drop fade descends behind the ear towards the back. It describes the route of the transition rather than one fixed shortest length. The back view is essential in a reference: you cannot assess this shape properly from the front alone.
Follow the line from the side to the back
Find a photograph that shows the area behind the ear. Indicate where the transition starts descending and how low it finishes at the back. A subtle drop and a deeper curve can share the same haircut name.
Ask for that route to be adapted to your own head shape. Copying a line exactly does not necessarily produce the same balance of light and dark on a different head.
Decide what remains above the drop
A lower transition at the back can leave a fuller area above it. Discuss whether you want to preserve that rounded shape or make it look lighter. Pointing out the bottom line alone says little about the hair above.
If your crown grows outwards, show how your hair sits without product. This lets you assess the back in the form you will see at home.
Choose the finish separately
You can choose a descending transition with or without an exposed skin area. Also explain whether the neckline should soften gradually or have a more defined outline. These are separate decisions.
Check the finished back with a mirror. A side photograph alone cannot tell you whether both sides meet in the intended shape. Keep your own back-view photograph for the next appointment if useful.
