Burst fade: short around the ear, with room for length at the back

A burst fade curves the short transition around the ear. Hair further towards the back can stay longer. This localised approach makes it important to show your intended back shape as well as the side.

Indicate the intended curve

Point out how wide the shorter area around the ear should be. A narrow curve retains more side length; a wider curve exposes a larger short area. Ask your barber to indicate the proposed boundary before cutting.

Choose the shortest length separately. A curved placement does not automatically require a finish down to skin.

Explain what should happen at the back

Do you want a longer section towards the neck, a softly rounded back or a compact finish? A burst fade does not settle that choice. Use a back-view reference alongside your side photograph.

If you are preserving length at the back, identify the section that must stay. Otherwise, “short around the ears” could extend further backwards than intended.

Assess the top and back together

With a longer silhouette, the proportion between the top and back matters. Let the hair fall naturally and discuss how much styling changes its direction.

After cutting, check around both ears and the back with a mirror. This lets you assess the whole shape, including the areas you do not see directly when styling each day.
